Childhood
Orville was born on August 19, 1871 in Dayton Ohio. His dad worked at a bishop. Orville was the youngest out of 5 brothers. One day his dad brought a helicopter for his sons and that's how he got interested to fly. The Wright family moved to Richmond in 1881. In Richmond Orville started liking kites, but the Wright family moved back to ohio in 1884. When Orville was in high school he was more interested in out side jobs than schools. That's why he dropped out of school in senior year and opened a print shop.
Planes
When Orville started liking planes Orville read a book called Death of Glider pioneer by Otto Lilienthal, that's how he got interested in flying. Orville and his brother when outside to look at how birds turn and fly. When Orville controlling he flew 120 feet. In 1903, December 17, the Wright brothers found out how to make a fly free plane; on the same year they got 852 feet in 9 seconds. In 1908 Orville made 57 compleat circles at an altitude of 120.
In 1909 Orville and his brother started selling planes in Europe. In 1909 Orville and his brother came back to Dayton Ohio. The wright brothers sold a plane for less than $2,000.
Orville and his brother made a plane that had a very powerful engine that got sold to the arm for $30,000.
In 1910 Orville took his 82 year old dad to his first and only flight. On the same year Orville and his brother flew together for the first time. Orville and his brother made a kite to test ideas for controlling the plane. Orville flew a plane with crown prince with him because crown prince’s dream was to fly with Orville. Orville’s brother (Wilbur) died because typhoid fever on May 30, 1912 on a plane.
Accomplishments
The plane became hard to control and crash hard on the ground. Orville suffered a broken thigh and two broken ribs and his passenger (Lieutenant) had to suffer a fractured skull. Orville received the first Daniel Guggenheim Metal. Orville was elected the hall of fame for Great Americans in 1965. Orville won anavition award called the Collier Trophy.
