Louis Pasteur by Alex H.

Have you wondered how it feeled to cure three major diseases, found where they come from and make a way to remove disease from milk and wine he lived what he said: “chance prefers the prepared mind.” and he certainly had a prepared mind.

Louis Pasteur was born December 27, 1822 in Dole France. He was born to Jean Joseph Jones and Jeanne Pasteur. His sister was heavily overjoyed in having a brother. His father was a highly devoted follower of Napoleon and was once a sergeant in his army. From his parents, Louis learned to be hard working from his father's profession and devoting from his mother. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to nearby Arbois, here he spent the days of his childhood playing with friends by the creek or on the street; but the greatest memories he had was at the wine festival there for Arbois was known for its wine.

He was taught in a one-room schoolhouse but didn’t show academic excellence until high school where he got many academic rewards; then they thought he could go to Ecole Normale Superiore in Paris, which was one of the most prestigious colleges at the time. Although it was hard to get into the college, he tried, but he got immediately homesick and a few months later he was disgracefully brought home by his father.

He later took more entrance exams it was trial and error but he finally got into the Ecole Normale Superiore but this time he was used to Paris, Here he shut off socially and worked exceedingly hard, everyone saw amazing potential in him. After he graduated with a major in science which was just emerging as a profession at the time. he hoped for a job at a major college but he only got one at a high school in Tournon. He was very arrogant in this way but he still took the job he later was offered lab assistant and immediately fled.

Pasteur’s first discovery in 1848 was about mirror image crystals, he discovered this because there was confusion about seeming identical in contents but he soon found that they had mirror elements.

Later in 1865 he was called by the silkworm industry because of a call of disease in the silkworms, yet he had never done any medical practice before, but he was determined to face this challenge. After weeks of studying he finally was able to go to a plant and address the situation; he took many notes and eventually singled out two diseases but even when they ordered new ones they got sick, so Pasteur did a bit of Marco Polo expeditioning to Japan and studied the wormeries there and saw that they thoroughly cleaned and sterilized the silkworm cages while the Europeans let everything rot away. he brought this information back and gave his advice although people were slow to follow they saw immediate results.

His second discovery was on a disease called anthrax in 1881 which was plaguing the countryside. Napoleon III notified him because of his silkworm success. There was a epidemic in livestock that was killing a lot of animals, he accepted this challenge and got to work. He eventually found that it was carried by earthworms and told farmers to bury the livestock in sand or places that earthworms couldn’t live slowly but steadily they started using his advice and the disease died down

His first major discovery was on pasteurization once a friend came over to his house and discussed his business in distillery he complained that sometimes his beer smelled bad or was bitter. Pasteur decided to start with this challenge over time he found to heat the liquid to a high heat, this process became known as pasteurization.

His second discovery was on a belief called spontaneous generation in 1862 he proved his wrong by collecting pure air in the alps and using swan-necked flasks which had swirls and bends, using this and melting the neck together he proved spontaneous generation wrong by doing this.

His next discovery was inspired by his childhood where a rabid wolf stalked his village and they all lived in terror of it he was inspired by this he started experimenting how to get rid of it eventually he used a method from a country doctor that included by using a weakened or less severe form of disease. He got a chance to use it when parents pleaded to give him the vaccination. It worked! The boy remained forever grateful and served as a bodyguard, in WWII he reppeled Nazi’s from Pastuer’s tomb. In 1895 Pasteur died of a stroke.
Over all his life Louis Pasteur made major accomplishments in biology from vaccines to curing a silkworm strain he made very powerful points in his life.
