“Remember The Ladies and be more favorable to them than you ancestors.” You want to know who said that? Abigail Adams, She was the second First Lady and she wrote lots of letters to help Women's Rights to her husband who was the second president of the USA.
Abigail was born on November 11, 1744 in Weymouth Massachusetts.Abigail also had a calendar that is different from our calendars today. The olden day calendars had to many leap days a year. So that made her Birthday November 22, 1744, ten days after her birthday. Abigail had very little schooling because of her poor health and Abigail Adams LOVED to read too. Abigail mostly read the authors william shakespeare, John milton, and many more. Abigail's parents names were William Smith and Elizabeth Quincy Smith. Her father was a Congregational Minister and came from a family of merchants. Abigail Adams also had very little friends when she was younger. She did have one friend tell her something very important one day. “You will either make a very bad or a very good woman.” Abiagil became a very good woman. I thought that this was a good quote because you can attach this to your life. Abigail was homeschooled her whole school life, along with her siblings. She also had no clue how to play cards sing or dance like the other girls because she was homeschooled. Since Abigail barley had friends she liked to visit her relatives often. She always loved her Grandparents from her mom’s side. Abigail disliked becoming a young lady and her grandma acknowledged the fact and she understood her.
Abigail first met John Adams in 1759 Abigail was only 15 years old. Abigail first met John when he came over with his friend Richard. Richard wanted to tell Abigail’s older sister that he liked her, but he was to shy to do it. John and Abigail loved to read and have lively conversations. Four years later.
John proposed to Abigail and they got married on October 25, 1764. Soon After Abiagil and John got married. Abiagil and John had their first baby, Abigail. They eventually had 5 children and they were named Abiagil, John Quincy, Susanna (who Died at the age of 2 in February 1770), Charles, and Thomas.
Abigail also loved to send letters. When Abiagil grew older she sent a letter to her husband and there is a quote in the letter. “Remember the ladies and be more favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of husbands. Remember all men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies We are determined to foment a rebellion , and will not hold ourselves beyond by any laws in…”
Abiagil was trying to say that the women should be remembered because men shouldn’t be able to do everything. Like becoming president.
Abigail Became a first lady in 1797 March 4th at the age of 52. When Abigail was a first lady she moved to Boston where she stayed for a few months or years. But while Abigail was in Boston the massacre occurred. Every morning Abigail was woken up by shouting and just a loud racket outside her window. But one morning it involved gun shooting and screams. Abiagil was also there in Boston when The Boston tea party. Abigail supported the tea party. She also hated the taxes. Abigail really disliked Boston so she moved back to her home, Weymouth Massachusetts on August 10, 1774. But later Abigail and John Adams moved into the White House. Abiagil and her family were the first occupants of the White House in 1800. There was nowhere to hang the laundry so she hung the laundry in the main room. When John lost the Election Abiagil was done with her popularity life. She Left the White House and went back to Weymouth Massachusetts. Abiagil Died at the age of 73 on October 28, 1818.Abiagil also left behind over 2,000 letters from her lifetime, 2,000!
Throughout Abigail’s life she helped women's rights. She wrote many letters over 2,000 Maybe even 20,000. And in one of them she wrote “Remember the Ladies and be more favorable to them than your ancestors.”
