The run

By:Sammy C.

Pok-ta-pok-ta-pok went the ball as I hit it against my hip. The 8 pound rubber ball bounced to the other side of the court where the other team got ahold of it. My friend on my team, Aapo hit the ball and boom! It traveled far to the end of the field and someone else hit it back over but another team mate of mine, Fabio couldn't save it and…

GOAL!!! Everyone in the crowd cheers and through jewelry the other team. The other team had won. We were going to get sacrificed. The crowd through rocks at us and bood.

A few hours later I find myself standing at the base of the great temple with my pok-ta-pok team. We were all shaching as we looked up and saw a man with a sharp blade meant for cutting out the heart of the victim. He was standing next to a stone the size if a rock with blood stains on it. Two men where on either end of the stones to hold the victim down on the rock.

“You” the man with the blade said pointing to Fabio, “step forward”

We watched fabio climb the many steps of the great temple. I had to look away as they cut out his heart out and the smell of blood filled my nose. Next up was Aapo. one by one my team disappeared. Finally, the man said, “Babajide step forward.”

Palms sweaty, I walked up a few steps of the temple hesitated a while thinking, “I don’t want to die this way.” I turned around noticing a small path leading into the forest. “ I might be able to get away. I looked back at the man. I could tell that he was getting impatient. I decided that I could get away. I turned and ran as fast as my feet could take me. Into the forest. Behind me I heard footsteps and voices but I didn’t look back, I just kept going. A Few minutes later I stopped to catch my breath behind a tree. I couldn't hear anyone now so I assumed I lost them. The first thing that I did was go and find water so I kept going. The trees got thicker and more bugs and animals were coming out. The air smelled new and good.

A Few hours later I decided to get some sleep. So I rested my back against a tree and eventually fell asleep. In the morning, I woke up to the fresh smell of roasted meat and tortillas. I heard voices not far away. With an empty stomach, I walked toward the smell. I hid behind a tree to see who they where. There were three men roasting a turkey. But then a branch snapped beneath my foot. The men looked my way and said, “who’s there?”

I stepped out from behind my tree and showed myself. “What are you doing in the woods?” a man said.

“I escaped from my tribe,” I told them.

“Why?” asks another man

“They were going to kill me” I said

“We are on our way to eqatszone, the land of freedom you can come along if you want,” said the man.

A few weeks has passed and we were on there way to the land of freedom. We trudged through waters and walked through the hot summer days on the dirt ground. Until one day we were walking and came upon a beautiful city that has a sign that red, “Welcome to eqaszone” we had made it to eqatzone. we were free.
